Come to think of a drone that takes off vertically like a helicopter but still having the horizontal blades of a plane is what has been in development at the university of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

The Quad SUAV:Q is a solar powered drone developed in university of Minnesota,  it takes off vertically, then for a flight, it unfolds to a six-foot wing span.
That much size is an advantage to carry the multi-spectral camera that does the crop health check for farmers..
Other drones like Quad SUAV:Q is the AV-8 Harrier series and V-22 Osprey
