Features of Android Oreo (Go Edition)

Published

on

Android Oreo which is the 8th Android version comes with a feature meant to suit the entry-level devices – Android Oreo Go edition. Android Go as many prefer to call it is a lite version of Android Oreo that is optimised at the Operating system and application levels to provide smooth performance on low end phones.
Low end phones are considered devices having 1GB RAM or lesser  and storage memory size less than 16GB. These low specification causes poor performance when running a full fledged Android Nougat or Oreo. Android Go was created to enhance user experience on entry-level phones and make it worth using and efficient. Apps developers have keyed into this idea to create an Go version of their applications.

Features of Android Go

Light Weight Apps:

The typical feature of Android Oreo Go Edition is the step down software resource requirements. Android Go applications open up faster than regular apps. Also, these re-imagined apps consume less space too.
More Storage Space:
[section label=”More Storage Space”]
You should know by now that you don’t get to use all of the storage space allocated in your internal phone storage memory. A 8GB storage capacity phone leaves as little as 3GB for user and app files while the rest is used by the OS. With this in mind, Android Go was designed to take lesser space, giving you 2x more space to store your files.
Storage Memory Optimisation:
[section label=”Storage Memory Optimisation”]
Google threw in a new application, Files Go that helps you get rid of unwanted files that has overstayed it’s welcome. It’s like a file explorer with storage space analysis edge. Files Go also helps you clean up App Cache and junks
Google re-imagined Go Apps:

Android Go still bears all of the exciting Google apps like Google search, Google Assitant, Gboard in the Go version (lite version).
Data Saver:
[section label=”Data Saver”]
Data consumption is a serious issue when you use a non-lite version of any app like Facebook. So, Google armed Android Go with the ability to let user control the data used by application in a more economical way. To make browsing the internet much cheaper, google armed Chrome as well with data saver. You can also share files without data using the peer-to-peer feature of Android Go.
Security:
[section label=”Security”]
Yes, why wouldn’t it be secured. Google play protect is enabled to get rid of malicious apps and regularly scans your phone for bad headed apps.

Why Google pushing OEMs to release regular security updates is best for you.

Published

on

Andriod phones are powered by an open source Android OS owned by Google.

Open source, meaning OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) can use Andriod OS in devices anyway fit. The free nature of Android OS allows OEMs to make customisation which makes an application standout in the Android market space, giving rise to Android Fragmentation.

Meanwhile, a different story is being told in the closed source iOS device space.

Andriod Fragmentation is refered to the reducded interoperability across devices of application. The major cause of Android Fragmentation is due to number of Android OS versions.
Google introduced project treble in Android 8.0, to tackle this rising calamity.

Normally, Google releases security patches monthly for the Andriod OS. But, it’s a herculean task for OEMs to incorporate these updates into their varying devices. Thanks to Android One, devices running Android One give lesser hassle.

OEMs are now expected to seal a written deal with Google to frequently release Security patches to devices according to a contract document received by The Verge. It requires Andriod OEMs to push updates to popular phones.

It states that OEMs are mandated to roll out regularly updates for two years to popular device manufactured from 31st January 2018. According to Google, it classifies a popular device as a device that 100,000 and above users have activated.

In addition, from 31st January, 2019, devices labelled as “security mandatory device” must receive frequent updates within 90 days interval.

Clearly, Google doesn’t make it compulsory for OEMs to release Andriod updates to devices, instead security patches.

If an OEM doesn’t comply with Google’s terms, “Google says it could withhold approval of future phones, which could prevent them from being released”, according to The Verge.

There’re still chances that the new contract won’t reduce Android Fragmentation in the nearest future. But in years to come, there’s a possibility of a kind of sync across varying devices. Security patches are highly important because they cover up loop holes which Google itself spots. Leaving out device in the market without paying attention to the possible room for attack is a bad habit.

In Nigeria, Android phones which I’ve come across receive security patches. The challenge is the cost of data to download the patch. It gets more serious when multiple updates which come at different times are ignored. It increases the internet data size required. Most users therefore do not mind the security updates.

One striking feature of iOS 12 is the improved AR compatibility. It enables you share the experience with others. Apple has this time gotten ahead Google!.

How long you use your phone and which app you spend most time with can now be tracked with the all new Screen Time. If user analysis is taken and shared, my best bet is that Facebook will be app iPhone users spend more time. Apple understood that smartphones can be very engaging, so the threw in an app to help keep check of overuse. If you own an iPhone not listed below, its time you get a newer iPhone.
